The Central Coast of California is inhabited by plants and animals that are adapted to living in the unique conditions of droughty summers and rainy winters. This series includes pictures made during late summer and autumn to illustrate some of the more common plants, especially trees, that live in this area.

We begin our plant survey in the cool and moist environs of the San Lorenzo Valley. Here, water-loving alder trees line the river. Often their bare roots can be seen floating in the shallow water along the river bank.
