Kuroishi city is located in the southwest of Aomori. This quiet town, still preserving the atmosphere of feudal clan times, has a wooden arcade roads called 'komise' which is authorized as one of the 'One Hundred Roads of Japan'. The city is also famous for its Tsugaru 'kokeshi' (curved and painted wooden doll) and hot spring. Nakano Momiji Hill is situated near the hot spring. In 1803, Tsugaru Yasuchika, the feudal lord of the Hirosaki clan, brought hundred kinds of maples from Kyoto and later planted on the hill. The hill turns burning red and shows us a lovely contrast with the waterfalls and the torrent.
