There are many virgin beech forest found in Mt. Hakkoda. Route 103, which runs from Aomori city to the Lake Towada via Mt. Hakkoda, goes through one of those virgin and secondary forests. It is called 'Hakkoda-Lake Towada Goldline' as the road turns into a golden tunnel in autumn when the sunshines on the yellow leaves and turn them golden. Once you pass through the curb in the picture, you'll find Sukayu, which is said to be one of the best hot springs in Aomori. It is a historic hot spring with a little hotel, and authorized as number one in the list of national hot springs. Darkened by the years of use, the enormous all-cedar bath tub which is called 'Senninburo' (the bath for one thousand people) looks like a gymnasium. It is mixed bathing, but I strongly recommend you to try if you visit Aomori.
