May 28, 2000. "Sand Festival" Nishimuro, Wakayama Prefecture.

Sand Festival was held at the Shirarahama Beach. Most groups began working around 8:00 a.m. while some groups in 38 started working before 5 o'clock in the morning! First, they make 3 meter- triangular pyramids with the sand then create some images by eroding the pyramids with seawater.
They don't allowed to use woods, boards or any supports, they can use only seawater and rainwater to fix the sand. Sand images are fragile in the sunny day because sunshine dries it rapidly. They have to take time into consideration to make the image looks perfect around noon. Carrying the bucket filled with seawater is not an artistic work but just a physical labor.

Only sand and seawater can create such detailed image. Early perfection causes a failure because of the sun drying.

This size is appropriate to keep the body stable though it needs the balance and smoothness.
