April 9, 2000. "Genji Festival" Kawanishi, Hyogo Prefecture.
About 1000 years ago, Minamotono Mitsunaka who is a grandchild of 56th
Emperor Seiwa, moved to the Tada basin in Kawanishi and built Tadain (it is
called the Tada shrine presently) in 970, which was the foundation of Seiwa
Genji. Minamotono Yoritomo who started the Kamakura shogunate and other
renowned generals of Genji were his descendants. There are many shrines
here related to Genji: the Manganji Shrine, the Yorimitsyji Shrine, the
Warabeji Shrine, etc. Kawanishi city is, as it were, the birthplace of
Genji and "samurai".
Genji Festival is a tourist event to introduce the history of Kawanishi,
hometown of Genji, broadly. The special feature of the event is the
nostalgic march of armored general, Tomoe gozen, a princess, boys and
samurai girls.
