From October 4 to October 5, 1999. Autumn-coloured Yatsugatake.

I will introduce some scenery from Yatsugatake where I was staying. Fujimikougen at the southern foot of Yatsugatake is at only about 1000m above sea level, but the 'kouyou' (leaves turning red and yellow) has not started yet. However, you can feel that the real autumn is definitely just around the corner.

October 4th. This is a picture of wild chestnut-burs with fresh chestnuts in them. This year's chestnuts are unusually large in size.

October 4th. I am not sure if their eggs hatch in autumn, but I met a group of pheasants (one male bird and a few youngsters, probably his) crossing a path a bit nervously. The male pheasant carefully kept his eye on us until all the children had crossed. When I approached toward them, he suddenly dashed to the opposite side of the path leaving his youngsters behind. I assume it was an action to keep the enemy's attention to himself and away from his children.

October 5th, at around 5:40pm. The picture of Yatsugatake taken from Fujimikougen. The weather has been bad everytime I came for the past few month as the clouds hid the mountain. This day, too, was not an exception, but just at this moment the clouds cleared away. The cottage in front is the cow stall of a small farm. Some cows can be seen in the picture, too.
