Spring Festival in Sekicho from Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture.
This is a small town festival. The area of 2-chome, Minami Honcho, in Joetsu City used to be called Sekicho a long time ago. May 5 was the day for the festival in this area. The Sekicho Town Block Association and the Young Men's Association, take the lead in organizing the festival. During the Spring Festival on May 5 and the Summer Festival in Joetsu City on July 25, they parade around town with a 'dashi' or festival cart. There is a taiko drum that has been handed down from generation to generation. The children beat the drum on the festival
cart as they go around town. They are elementary school children and gather at the town hall every Thursday to practice.
